In recent weeks we have had Michelle Bachman claim that she feels that she had god’s personal endorsement. Reverend Bachman recently told us that Herman Cain’s tax proposal was “of the devil”.
Governor Rick Perry said essentially the same thing — god wanted him to run. He really wasn’t all that interested but when god calls, well, what are you gonna do?
Rick Santorum’s wife suggested that it is gods decision that he run.
Herman Cain, was also called by god.
In the past god wanted George Bush to be president. He wanted his servant George to invade Iraq because old Saddam was, maybe, the anti-Christ.
Interestingly god had let Rev. Mike Huckabee know that he (Mike) shouldn’t run. He had a higher calling to be a Fox News commentator. Jesus apparently wanted Sarah Palin to make millions by becoming a right wing icon. Does she have anything to say? It doesn’t matter, when Sarah speaks, god listens.
I have a theory. I always have a theory. Is it possible that God may be making prank calls? Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I feel something coming through the fillings in my teeth. Yes, it is god telling me to NOT run for president. So, if a killer tells the jury that god told him to kill, that is generally rejected, but when a Republican candidate tells us that god told him to run, well, that is proof positive.
I fear that god is setting up a number of candidates for defeat! God was always a practical joker — like the time when he caused Job to lose all his children, animals, etc., just to show the devil that Job was a loyal subject, or the time when he jokingly told Abraham to kill his son Isaac. I’ll bet that little Isaac was petrified with fear (and, afterward, was a really obedient kid)! Or the time when he told the Jews to go and wander in the desert for 40 years. They actually believed him! Or when god told them to settle in Israel — the only place in the middle east that didn’t have oil. God always was good for a laugh or two. Well, heaven is probably boring. All god has is he and his son, and a bunch of insufferably righteous Christians — not much fun.
Over the years, since the time of the election of Ronald Reagan, religious cranks ceased simply to be a minor public nuisance and grew to be the major element of the Republican rank and file. The Republican Party has become less and less like a traditional political party in a representative democracy and more like an apocalyptic cult. This trend has several implications, none of them pleasant. In the sick, unconscionable view of the Republicans, economic revitalization is all about more and better tax breaks for corporations, millionaires, and billionaires. They clearly want to gut Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. All of the candidates claim to want to repeal Obama Care as one of their first acts. “Repeal and Replace” they say. Replace with what? Clearly, what they want is to have 51 million Americans without health insurance and some 45,000 dyeing each year because they could not afford medical care. If the rich didn’t have to pay to help these unfortunate people, it would certainly help their bottom line.
It is frightening that the Republican pandering to religious fundamentalism is their full time vocation. A large fraction of the American people are becoming more like Iranians, Pakistanis, Saudis, etc., on the questions of evolution vs.creationism, scriptural inerrancy, the existence of angels and demons. We, as a country are sinking slowly but surely into some sort of Christian Theocratic Morass. I would try to explain the difference between a Christian Theocratic Morass and an Islamic Theocratic Morass if I understood what it might be. It is becoming more difficult to find differences between Christian Theocrats and their enemy — the Islamic Theocrats.
One poll I read claims that, of the Republicans who are likely to vote in the primary: 25% believe that President Obama is the “anti Christ”. 57% think he is a “secret” Muslim. They think that he wants to turn the United States into some sort of One World Government. Obama wants to take their guns away. They think he is a socialist. Who knows what else is in their fertile but sick minds.
The Republicans as well as the right-wing media are doing their job very well. After a riot of unbridled greed such as the world has not seen since the viking’s looting and raping expeditions into Scotland, and after an unprecedented broad and rapid transfer of wealth upward by Wall Street and its corporate satellites, where is the popular anger directed? Astoundingly it is directed toward “Washington spending” – which has increased primarily to provide unemployment compensation, food stamps and Medicaid to those economically damaged by the previous decade’s corporate greed. Or the Republicans have directed popular rage harmlessly against pseudo-issues: school prayer, death panels, birtherism, abortion, and gay marriage none of which stands to solve our problems.
Can we wake up in time? Or is it already too late?
(Disclosure) I have not been called upon by god, my wife, my friends, my family, my neighbors, or even my dog to write this, or any, blog. I simply feel possessed.
