Bully for us!

We Americans are a much better people today than we were two days ago.  To be sure, we are a bit slow.  But, to paraphrase Winston Churchill: after trying everything else, Americans will finally came around and do the right thing.  Bully for us.  The people who tried to kill the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), and wasted probably millions of dollars in the process have met defeat.

Most of the industrialized world went toward government-controlled health care right after World War II.  Their outcomes are better than ours.  Their people live longer and their quality of life, right to the end, is generally better.  It seems so strange to me that even though we continually tell ourselves that we have the best medical care in the world, there is no country, NO COUNTRY that wants a system like ours.  Are we really that dense?  Some of us must be.

Our doctors could very well be the best in the world, but what good is that if no one can afford them?  In some of the economically disadvantaged parts of the country we have been seeing an increase of free medical clinics — just as we see in the poorest parts of Africa!  Is this something to be proud of?  Anyone with any human decency, any American who has any pride in his country should be appalled.

One right wing economist was quoted as saying that “we need to accept the principle that sometimes poor people will die just because they are poor”.  NO WE DON’T!!!

The people who seemed to be most opposed to the ACA were right wing Christians,  you know, the ones who believe in an imaginary fella who supposedly said, “Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me”.  Catholic bishops were also opposed to ACA.  Why?  Well, it would make it too easy for women to get health care.

This lawsuit was the best chance of defeating ACA.  The right-wing propaganda machine tells us that most Americans don’t want ACA.  Maybe yes, maybe no.  But when you ask Americans about the individual mandates, they are overwhelming in favor of each of them.

We are a better people today than we were two days ago.
