It is hard not to think about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The papers say that the shooter, Adam Lanza fatally shot twenty children and six adults. I guess that if you are counting bodies, that is what you get. However, he did irreparable damage to a lot more people than that. What about the brothers and sisters of those victims, the parents, the grandparents, etc?  We will never know the extent of the damage that Lanza did.

At a time like this, people simply say that God acts in mysterious ways. I guess so. But I have news! We humans act in even more mysterious ways. We still continue to assume that some intelligent deity who allowed that carnage to happen, is worth praying to. We then thank him for calling all of those 6 and 7 year-olds home when they never had a chance to even sample what life has to offer. Who is more nuts, us or Lanza?

If this isn’t nutty, I don’t know what is.

  1. “God acts in mysterious ways” is a cliche I have yet to hear anyone say in the Sandy Hook Elementary School case. In fact the opposite has been true. Religious leaders of all denominations have said words to the effect that this was not God’s Will, but a case of pure evil, that thoughts such as “God meant this to happen” or that, again, “God acts is mysterious ways” is rubbish. For once at the Sandy Hook Elementary School killings, both the religious and nonreligious found themselves on the same page.
